Layer After Layer

If you've been part of the beauty world for a while now, you'll be well familiar with the countless products out there. From serums to moisturises to exfoliators to cleansers (I could go on) the world of skincare is HUGE. Figuring out what you need, when you need it and how to apply it can be overwhelming. What are the essentials and what can you go without? If only there was an all-in-one guide out there telling me how to layer my skincare properly....

Welcome to the ultimate how-to guide explaining what's worth layering and more so, how to actually layer it.

Ever watched someone proceed with their 10 step skincare routine? You think they've finally finished until they whip out another product from their Mary Poppins inspired makeup drawer. It's overwhelming (and expensive). Two rules to go by… less is more and always apply lightest to heaviest.

The Jojoba Company Activating Cleaning Oil

So, Let's Unpack What To Use And When To Use It.

1. Cleanser: A.M. & P.M.

A few years ago, all I used was a cleanser, a moisturiser and the occasional SPF. Now before you gasp in horror, in my defence I was only new to the skincare scene. Starting out, the simple combo is actually perfect for newbies as most faces actually do better with fewer products. Moreso, it's a testament to the powers within a cleanser. As a morning and night weapon against the elements, cleansers work to remove makeup as well as grime and nasties from your skin. Even better, a cleanser wipes the slate clean so to say, in order for later ingredients from other products to absorb properly. Our favourite cleanser? Luckily, there's one for every skin type! Meaning not every kind will work for everyone.

Cleansing oil is made for pretty well all skin types. From combination to oily to sensitive to normal, the formula is designed to be applied to dry skin and massaged into your skin before rinsing with water. My favourite? The Jojoba Company Activating Cleaning Oil is like liquid gold. Furthermore, it melts onto your skin right away to remove makeup whilst maintaining moisture.

Cleaning milk is for the more dehydrated and sensitive skin types. (An ideal pick for Winter). Designed to be massaged into damp skin, the formula is gentle and nourishing on the skin whilst doing an effective removalist job of nasties. Infused with natural shea butter, the Medik8 Cream Cleanser is therefore perfect to provide nourishment and hydration to mature skin.

A cleaning foam or gel is ideal for oily and acneic skin. Effective in removing deeply hidden grime, the product should also be massaged into damp skin. My favourite for sure is the Dermalogica Cleansing Gel. As it maintains moisture within the skin, it furthermore does a thorough job of removing impurities.

2. Toner: A.M. &/or P.M.

To be honest, back in the day I had never quite understood what a toner did. However, now I understand it as a sort of primer for your face. Just as you prime your skin before applying makeup, priming your skin for your skincare routine makes sense doesn't it? As a hydrating and gentle application, it furthermore enhances the absorption later. Although not a necessary step, it’s the extra one to heighten the benefits of your products.

Depending on your skin type, choosing a BHA or AHA based formula is recommended. Moreso, they work to prevent breakouts or uninvited blackheads. Try the Pelactiv Essential Clarifying Toner. Leaving your skin refreshed and hydrated, it furthermore provides firming action.

Alpha H Vitamin C

3. Serum: A.M. &/or P.M.

As I started to mature in my skincare journey, serum was the first addition. Let me tell you, gone are the days of a serum-less routine. Think of a serum as a health shot. You know those small, almost too healthy shots of pure goodness? Just like these instant fixes, a serum provides quick results. The world of serums is HUGE. Therefore, depending on your skin needs, I can promise you there's a solution in the form of a serum.

SO, you're not sure where to begin? I recommend using a Vitamin C serum as a safe start. Not to mention the instant brightening effect, it furthermore reduces dark spots and blemishes. That's why I use the Alpha-H Vitamin C Serum with Grape Seed. Whilst boosting Vitamin C, the additional antioxidants and Hyaluronic Acid, therefore, improve damaged and prematurely aged skin. I use this in the morning after cleansing.

Dermalogica MultiVitamin Power Firm

Eye Cream: A.M.& P.M.

Especially as we age, an Eye Cream becomes more prominent in our skincare routines. Designed for the delicate skin under our eyes, the product works to reduce wrinkles and fine lines. Although not an essential step of your routine, it’s an addition that will only reap benefits. Therefore, if you've been convinced to try one, I recommend the Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Firm. The formula of seaweed extract, Vitamin A, C and E protects from damage as well as accelerating repair.

6. Retinol: P.M.

Retinol is one of those 'should I or shouldn't I' products a lot of us contemplate. Designed to be used at night before and after moisturising, the mysterious product essentially increases cell turnover as well as collagen production for subsequent clearer and younger-looking skin. However, the strong formula isn't for everyone. Furthermore, if you are starting out, choose a low percentage like The Ordinary Retinol 0.2%. Although delivering results over time, the low content is best for beginners with reduced irritation.

7. SPF: A.M.

So, you've done all the steps for your morning routine. However, don't get ahead of yourself. Without a doubt, the most important of any step is your SPF! It's your shield against UV Rays. Additionally, SPF prevents any further damage from the sun. Prevent visible signs of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles by applying the product every morning! (Yes, even if it's cloudy).

The best part is, these days you can wear tinted moisturiser with SPF in it. Therefore, look glammed up whilst protecting your skin. Try the Payot CC Creme SPF50+ for best results. Providing UV protection, it furthermore acts as a corrective.
